ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

               TunisianCommunity.org

The Tunisian Community Center

With websites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter connecting people around the world,
social networking has become a way of life.  Motivated by the desire to address the cultural

needs of the Tunisian-American community and by the aspiration to highlight its value, The

founding directors of the Tunisian Community Center, were a step ahead of the times, however,

when in 1999 they launched a site that would bring together the Tunisian-American community.

The modest website, with the help of several tech-savvy Tunisian volunteers over the years,

became what is now a powerful, interactive Web presence.

MERGING THE ONLINE COMMUNITY WITH THE OFFLINE COMMUNITY

What began as an Internet discussion board has blossomed into the Tunisian Community Center
(TCC), an electronic network that has its central location at TunisianCommunity.org, but also

includes local chapters in most U.S. metropolitan areas. Over the years, the organization was able

to inspire the formation of local chapters that carry out the mission of the organization by conducting

community-based activities that promote cross-cultural literacy.

Regional chapters foster “community building and cultural outreach”, while TunisianCommunity.org
remains “an address for the community and a gateway to its culture”.

THE TUNISIAN-AMERICAN DAY

Though their homes span the distance between the U.S. East and West coasts, the Tunisian-American
community comes together once a year to celebrate the Tunisian American Day.

One of TCC’s biggest achievements is having established, in 2005, the tradition of Tunisian-American
Day. It is celebrated on May 27th of every year, which marks the birthday of Ibn Khaldun, the 14th century
Tunisian philosopher and statesman. Ibn Khaldun was chosen by the organization as its cultural symbol
because of his contributions to Tunisia and the rest of the world, being universally recognized

as the Father of Sociology.

The Tunisian American Day is a recurring opportunity to celebrate our community, its heritage

and America’s diversity. In 2009, the Tunisian American Day obtained official endorsement from

the U.S. Congress.

To honor the occasion, TCC organizes a Hafla (gala) at the end of May in a different U.S. city each

year. Included in the Hafla are a traditional Tunisian dinner and live Tunisian music, as well as

the presentation of the Ibn Khaldun Award and the A.K. Chebbi Student of the Year scholarship.

TCC named the award after Ibn Khaldun because a large part of his work reflects TCC’s mission,

especially his ideas about the importance of kinship and solidarity and about the relationship

between culture and environment.

The Student scholarship is named after the 20th century Tunisian poet-prodigy Abul Kacem Chebbi

whose name came to symbolize the passion and creativity of Youth.

Mission Statement

Report by UAB student Samuel E. Gentle, Study-In-Tunisia Scholarship 2007 awardee.

tn

I am grateful to everyone who helped make the Study-in-Tunisia Scholarship possible. The experience I had this summer will be one that I cherish for the rest of my life.

The five-week trip began with a one week stay with a host family in Tunis. It was there that I was introduced to the Tunisian culture and way of life during the busy summer season. The season filled with weddings, haflas, late nights, and dinner parties. I was able to get the ‘true experience’ of Tunisian summertime throughout this week. I enjoyed it immensely.

Weeks two and three were spent with eight other American students in Tunisia for the "Learn & Serve" Program administered by AMIDEAST, a non-profit agency that teaches English and helps students study in the U.S. (AMIDEAST has been in Tunis for over thirty years). We spent these two weeks seeing the sights of this small, but beautiful country and studying colloquial Tunisian Arabic at AMIDEAST. Having studied Modern Standard Arabic for one year before going to Tunisia, the Tunisian dialect took some getting used to. During our travels, we discovered Tabarka, Bizerte, Djerba, El Jem, and the remote, southern oasis of Ksar Ghilane. It was fascinating to see the different faces of Tunisia from roman ruins, to the pristine waters of the Mediterranean.

AMIDEAST had been asked by the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education to provide ten American university students to serve as conversational tutors/native speakers at the English Language Village in Nabeul. The language village occurred during my fourth and fifth week in Tunisia. After our sight-seeing and language study, we traveled to the beautiful seaside town of Nabeul for the second annual English Language Village. Our days there were filled with one-on-one and group interaction with the Tunisian university students, and group excursions to Hammamet, Houaria & Kalibia. In the mornings, each pair of American students would participate in each discussion group of twenty Tunisians with a local university professor as a moderator. The topics were quite diverse and ranged from lighter topics like Jokes and Proverbs & Values to more heated issues such as Stereotypes & Prejudice, AIDS, and Gender Roles. Despite some occasional awkwardness, the Tunisians were very hospitable to us, and I felt quite welcome in their country.

The five weeks I spent in this amazing place will not be forgotten soon and this trip provided a wonderful first study abroad experience. I feel that Tunisia is a great “first destination” for someone interested in studying the Arab world or the Maghreb.

CELEBRATING THE TUNISIAN-AMERICAN DAY-2010

C

Safa Dahan (UCLA-2010)

On May 29, 2010 members of the Tunisian-American community and their friends attended the Tunisian American Day / Ibn Khaldun Award-2010 Hafla. As in previous years, they came from all corners of the United States. They even came from across the Atlantic...From Tunisia, to be precise: a two-dozen person delegation representing the Tunisian Organization for Aerospace Education (OTEAS).

Music Star Safa Dahan.

They came to be part of the proud tradition, now in its sixth year, established by the Tunisian Community Center. It was an opportunity for the capacity crowd at the elegant Grand Horizon Room at UCLA to network, experience some Tunisian style and panache, and of course savour some Couscous and enjoy some great Tunisian Music. They also came to celebrate the achievements of Dr Laoucet Ayari and  Haythem Abid.

                                                            Dr Laoucet Ayari                                                             Haythem Abid
Reflecting the organization's focus on the future, two first-generation Tunisian-American teenagers, charmingly MC'd the formal portion of the evening during which the guests were treated to several inspiring speeches by L.A. team leader Raouf Khelil, Ibn Khaldun Institute Director Leila Laoudji, UN diplomat Dr Salah Bourjini, our Tunisian Student federation Director Youssef Khouja,, and Guest of Honor Salem Chaieb (OTEAS).
...my warmest greetings to you as you gather to celebrate the Tunisian American Day.
I wish I were able to join you and share in what is sure to be a memorable event for all in attendance...
(US Senator Barbara Boxer)

Then, it was time for the Award ceremonies: first, it was the handsome, 6'2" UCLA student-athlete Haythem Abid's turn to receive the A.K. Chebbi Student of the Year scholarship. After that, came the highlight of the evening: the presentation of the Ibn Khaldun Award to Dr M. Laoucet Ayari who delivered a magnificent acceptance speech. In his his heart-felt remarks, our honoree brought the attendees attention to some of the great values that are particular to the Tunisian culture.

That was for the formal segment of the event. The rest of the evening is when the Hafla, in the true sense, took place: the attendees were treated to a sensational Tunisian Music performance by the very talented Safa Dahan; for the rest of the evening, virtually every one in the audience filled up the dance floor and danced to her enchanting voice.

TunisianCommunity.org

Our website and our Electronic Newsletter, The Community Gazette, along with our custom toll-free phone number and our teleconferencing account establish our cyber connectivity and function as a virtual community center.

We supplement our use of the "Hi-Tech" by the "Hi-Touch": our community-based, local and regional meet-ups during the major cultural festivals and during the National and  Religious holiday celebrations.

In 2005, the organization  established the May 27th "Tunisian American Day" tradition. It represents a recurring opportunity to celebrate our community and its Heritage as well as the enduring Tunisian-American friendship.

Organized in a different US city every year, it is celebrated during a Hafla (or gala) that coincides with the birthday anniversary of our organization's cultural symbol, Ibn Khaldun. The event includes the The Ibn Khaldun Award presentation ceremony as well as live Tunisian music entertainment and catered Tunisian dinner.

As part of the Event, on the following day, Our organization's annual meeting takes place. In addition, The Ibn Khaldun Institute and The Student Federation hold their yearly leadership conferences.
